History: “Hammerin’ Harmon” Killebrew, also known as “the Killer,” was a power-hitter who spent all but one season of an impressive 22-year career with the same organization. Originally joining the Washington Senators und MLB’s Bonus Rule in 1954, Killebrew moved with the franchise to Minnesota in 1961 when they became the Minnesota Twins. He eventually spent a single season with the Kansas City Royals in 1975 before formally announcing his retirement in 1976. Killebrew hit 573 career home runs, recording eight separate seasons in which he hit 40+ homers and leading the league in homers six times. He hit the longest home runs ever recorded at two different stadiums, a 520 footer at Minnesota’s Metropolitan Stadium and a 471 foot dinger at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium, as well as becoming the first player to hit a ball over the left field roof at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. The Twins retired Killebrew’s number 3 in 1975, and in his fourth year of eligibility he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984.
